The Lupus III cloud forms a dense, dark strand running west-to-east across the border between Lupus and Scorpius, and obscuring the stars of the Milky Way beyond. The two brighter stars visible in the western (right-hand) part of the image are V856 and V1027 Scorpii, whose combined light illuminates part of the dark cloud to create the small reflection nebula Bernes 149.
