Note
While the term 'Wood-elves' might be taken as a synonym for 'Silvan Elves', and in fact has the same derivation, it seems in practice to be used by Tolkien almost exclusively of the Elves of Mirkwood. For this reason, this entry concentrates on that culture: for more details of the Silvan people, refer to the entry for Silvan Elves.

Wood-elvesElves of the forests of Middle-earth
Note that the lineage of the Silvan Elves is not as clear as this simple diagram suggests. At least some may have been descended from the Nandor, and there may even have been Elves of non-Telerin descent among them. The Silvan Elves who dwelt in the forests of Middle-earth, and especially the people ruled by Thranduil in the northern parts of Mirkwood.
