Tawarwaith

The Silvan Elves

A term for the Elvish people known far more commonly by their English name, as the Silvan Elves. These were members of the Teleri who had abandoned the Great Journey east of the Misty Mountains, and remained among the forests of the Vales of Anduin. They were thus related to the Sindar of Beleriand, and descended from the Nandor, the Teleri who abandoned the journey eastward of the Misty Mountains.

The name Tawarwaith means 'Forest People', a suitable name for these woodland Elves. It contains the word táwar, 'forest', which is also seen in Tawar-in-Drúedain, the Elves' name for the Drúadan Forest. A more common and related Elvish word for 'forest' is taur, seen in names like Taur-nu-Fuin or Taur-im-Duinath.
