An Elvish name derived from sinda ('grey') and collo ('cloak'), and given as a surname to Elwë, one of the two original leaders of the Telerin Elves. The name was adapted to become Singollo, and as the peoples of the Teleri became separated, over the long years in Beleriand the language of the Elwë's people, the Sindar, shifted and changed. Eventually the name became Thingol, and by that name the King of Doriath became most commonly known in later histories.
