A member of the Bracegirdle family who married into the Brandybuck clan when she wed Seredic Brandybuck. They had three children, Doderic, Ilberic and Celandine, and were present at the Farewell Party held by Bilbo in III 3001.

The Lord of the Rings tells us little about Hilda, but the genealogies in volume XII of The History of Middle-earth are a little more informative. There, she's consistently shown as the niece of Lobelia Bracegirdle (better known as Lobelia Sackville-Baggins). Hilda was the daughter of Lobelia's elder brother Bruno, and was the younger sister of Hugo Bracegirdle.

Notes

1

The name Hilda comes ultimately from Old Norse hildr, 'battle'. Hild was the name of one of the Valkyries, a fact that helps to explain its use as a feminine forename. The related Hild was the name of a figure in the history of Rohan: Hild the sister of Helm Hammerhand.
