Gruffo Boffin

The son of Uffo Boffin

A grandson of Otto Boffin the Fat, Gruffo was the son of Uffo Boffin and Sapphira Brockhouse, and was born just ten years after Bilbo Baggins. Gruffo had one son of his own, Griffo, who married into the Baggins clan when he wed Frodo's cousin Daisy. Gruffo survived until the year III 2999 (1399 by the Shire-reckoning) when he died at the age of ninety-nine, and thus missed Bilbo's Farewell Party by just two years.

Notes

1

Gruffo's name does not appear to be interpretable, but rather to lie phonetically between the names of his father Uffo and his son Griffo. The name might just possibly be related to the Celtic word cryf, meaning 'strong', an element that appears in the Welsh surname Gruffudd, though the similarity here does not seem to be intentional.
