This region of the sky is dominated, in terms of area, by the large constellations Pisces and Cetus, the Fishes and the Whale, though neither of these contain conspicuously bright stars. Probably the most distinctive pattern of stars in this region is the Square of Pegasus, northward from Pisces. Eastward from Pegasus lie the constellations of Andromeda and Triangulum, each of which contains its own namesake galaxy. |
Right ascension is calculated from the point where the Sun, following the line of the Ecliptic, crosses the Celestial Equator at the Vernal Equinox. That point, which is designated the First Point of Aries and marks the exact centre of this map, currently falls within Pisces though (as the 'Aries' in its name suggests) it is not fixed and is gradually moving across the sky into neighbouring Aquarius.
