The twisting spiral form of NGC 4438 forms a pair with its near neighbour NGC 4435 to the north, and together this pair is known as the Eyes Galaxies. The distortion around NGC 4438 is caused by interactions with its fellow members of the Virgo Cluster, including its close companion NGC 4435, and especially the massive elliptical M86 to the west.
