A barred spiral galaxy in Pegasus with a highly luminous and active nucleus, and a pair of distinctive arms emerging from a significant central bar structure. C44 is thought to have merged with another smaller galaxy in the past, and event which helps to account for the strong starburst activity (the rapid formation of new stars) throughout the galaxy's structure.
