NotesNGC 1649 is a very distant open star cluster, at some 160,000 light years from the Solar System. This associates it with the Large Magellanic Cloud, which lies at a similar distance in a similar part of the sky, but NGC 1649 is an outlying element of that small galaxy, lying several degrees from the main mass of the Magellanic Cloud the sky.
