Collinder 140 lies relatively close to the Solar System in comparison to other similar clusters, so that it can be seen as a faint grouping of stars by the naked eye. The cluster's members are represented by the stars with a blue-white colouration in this image (the brighter yellowish star to the northeast is not part of Collinder 140, but a giant designated HR 2834 in the foreground of the cluster beyond).
