Leukothea

35 Leukothea

An asteroid of the Solar System's main Asteroid Belt, Leukothea follows a relatively eccentric orbit that carries it back and forth through the belt as it orbits the Sun. Each of its orbits takes five years and 62 days to complete, while the asteroid rotates on its own axis in a period of 30.9 hours.

Leukothea takes its name from a sea goddess of Greek mythology. There is a certain mild irony in the name, as Leukothea means 'white goddess', whereas the asteroid that carries that name has very low albedo value of 0.07, which means that it is dark and non-reflective. The asteroid Leukothea is irregular in form, and composed of carbonaceous compounds.
