Interstellar Medium
ISM
A general term for matter of various kinds that drifts between the stars in a galaxy. The Interstellar Medium is relatively dense in spiral galaxies, but much less so in galaxies of the elliptical type. It is from the Interstellar Medium that new stars form, and dying stars cast their matter back into it as they reach their end.
