The bright star in the central regions of the Collinder 45 cluster is the eclipsing binary SZ Camelopardalis. This variable star does not appear to be part of the Collinder 45 cluster, but rather to lie on the same line of sight. Though it is very distant at approximately 2,800 light years, it is nonetheless in the foreground of the even more distant open cluster (estimated to lie about a thousand light years beyond SZ Camelopardalis).
