May Gamgee

A sister of Sam Gamgee

A daughter of Hamfast Gamgee and Bell Goodchild, and sister to Samwise Gamgee of the Company of the Ring.

May's sisters Daisy and Marigold were both named after flowers, so it's most likely that May's name came from the mayflower, a name used for the flowers of various plants that blossom in the month of May. In fact the month named 'May' was itself unknown in the Shire, and the Hobbit name 'May' was likely derived from the fifth month of the Shire year instead (Tolkien gives the name of that month as Thrimidge, but that is itself a translation of the original, unknown, name of the month).
