Notes

1

The maps included with The Lord of the Rings do not extend far into this region. The northern parts of the map shown here, then, are necessarily speculative, and are based on textual descriptions given in the Introduction to Unfinished Tales. The northern limits of the Icebay is unknown, but it was evidently vast in extent. Earlier editions of The Lord of the Rings show the label 'Icebay of Forochel' along the coast of the smaller bay in the southwest of this entry's map, but later editions include an arrow next to this label, looping northward to indicate the wider Bay beyond.
