In his youth, Aragorn travelled south to Rohan and Gondor, and fought there for King Thengel and Steward Ecthelion II. At that time he concealed his true name and descent, and called himself instead Thorongil, with the meaning 'Eagle of the Star'. The 'Star' here was his badge, the silver star-brooch worn by the Rangers, and referred to as the Star of the Dúnedain.
