Dudo Baggins

The youngest of Fosco Baggins’ three children

The youngest of the three children of Fosco Baggins and Ruby Bolger, Dudo was of roughly the same generation as Bilbo Baggins, but twenty-one years younger than his illustrious relative. He was present at Bilbo's Farewell Party, and died eight years later at the age of 98. Dudo's elder brother was Drogo the father of Frodo Baggins, making Dudo Frodo's uncle.

Notes

1

The male members of the Baggins family generally had forenames without specific meanings, and Dudo appears to be one of these. Its similarity to modern English 'dude' (originally meaning a foppish man, later applied much more broadly) is hard to ignore. However, as a relatively modern coinage from the late nineteenth century this seems very unlikely to have been intended by Tolkien as an origin of the Hobbit-name 'Dudo'.
