Melotte 22 1759 forms part of the backdrop to the Pleiades cluster but, though the 'Melotte 22' in its designation refers to that cluster, its faint red light actually shines through the young blue stars of the Pleiades from thousands of light years beyond. The two bright stars in the foreground are actual Pleiadean stars: Atlas to the northeast, and Alcyone to the northwest. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
