This star's name comes ultimately from a kind of Mongolian bear known as a mazaalai, but as a star-name it was originally listed with the spelling Mazalaai (that is, with a transposed 'a'). The IAU now officially gives the star's name with the updated spelling Mazaalai, but because of the initial confusion, the alternative spelling Mazalaai can still be found in various sources.
