This giantstar is more than seventy times the Sun'sdiameter. The matter than makes it up is tenuous in nature, so despite its enormous size, it has only barely more mass than the Sun. 56 Orionis shows an anomalously rapid proper motion, suggesting that it was accelerated out of its original stellar association at some point in the distant past.
