Notes

1

The earliest definite date we can put on the Mayoralty of the Shire is III 3013 (1413 by the Shire-reckoning), the latest election at a Free Fair at which Will Whitfoot could have been chosen for the position. It seems clear in context that the office of Mayor must have gone much further back into history, perhaps even to the founding of the Shire itself in III 1601 (S.R. 1), but we lack any definite historical confirmation of its antiquity.
