Notes
The peoples of Beleriand used 'the North' in two different ways, and this entry refers to its use for northern lands held by allies, especially Dor-lómin; sometimes, however, 'the North' could be be used of the more distant northern region held by Morgoth and his servants, and for that latter usage see the alternative entry for The North.

When the people of Beleriand spoke of 'the North', they were most often referring to the terrors of Morgoth's kingdom among the Iron Mountains. At times, though, the name was used to describe the allied lands that lay between Beleriand and Angband. In particular, the name was used for Dor-lómin, the grey land beyond the Mountains of Shadow that was held by the Men of the House of Hador.

Notes

1

The 'North' in this context most usually referred to Dor-lómin, the land shown in the western section of the map, under the control of the House of Hador. The term might in principle also be extended to Dorthonion, further to the east, which was held by the House of Bëor until the Dagor Bragollach.
