The Chronicle of Arda

Welcome to The Chronicle of Arda. This section of the site provides automated annals for all four Ages of the Sun and Moon. For any period of Arda's history, the Chronicle will display the events that happened in that time. Events and characters are entered into the Chronicle as they are added to the main database: like the rest of The Encyclopedia of Arda this section of the site is expanding all the time.

You can have the Chronicle look up events for specific dates by entering one or two years in the form below. If you enter two dates, the Chronicle will display events that happened between those two years. If you leave one of the dates blank, the Chronicle will display events in the century around the single year you specify.

For years after III 1601 (the year of the foundation of Shire, and therefore Shire Year 1), the Chronicle will also show years by the Shire-reckoning in a second column.

The First Age

428Birth of Belegund, eldest son of Bregolas.
432Death of Boromir, lord of Ladros; he is succeeded by his son Bregor.
c.432Approximate date for the birth of Beren Erchamion.
c.435Approximate date of the birth of Sador Labadal.
439Birth of Húrin Thalion, later Lord of Dor-lómin.
441Probable date of birth of Handir of the Haladin.
443Probable date of the birth of Morwen Eledhwen.
c.445Birth of Ereinion, later called Gil-galad.
448Death of Bregor, lord of Ladros. He is succeeded by his son Bregolas.
450Probable date of the birth of Rían daughter of Belegund.
c.450Birth of Larnach.
451Probable year of the death of Haldan. His son Halmir succeeds as Lord of Brethil.
455Deaths of Angrod and Aegnor in the Dagor Bragollach.
Celegorm and Curufin flee Himlad for Nargothrond.
Winter The breaking of the Siege of Angband and beginning of the Dagor Bragollach.
456Barahir and his companions begin their outlaw existence in Ladros.
Fingolfin challenges Morgoth to single combat, and is slain. Fingon becomes High King of the Noldor.
Spring The worst assaults of the Dagor Bragollach draw to a close.
457Capture of Minas Tirith by the forces of Sauron.
458A band of Orcs is attacked and defeated by the People of Haleth, with the aid of Beleg of Doriath.
Húrin and Huor are brought to Gondolin by Thorondor.
459Húrin and Huor return out of Gondolin to Dor-lómin.
460Autumn Gorlim betrays Barahir and his outlaw band. They are destroyed, leaving Beren as the sole survivor.
462Morgoth attempts an invasion of Hithlum, but is repulsed. Galdor son of Hador is slain defending Barad Eithel.
464Spring Marriage of Húrin and Morwen; Túrin is born later in the year.
Winter Beren abandons Dorthonion and travels to Doriath, where he first comes upon Lúthien.
465Likely date of the birth of Brandir son of Handir, later Lord of Brethil.
Beren sets out from Doriath on the Quest for the Silmaril.
Finrod and Beren are imprisoned in Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Finrod is slain by a werewolf, but Beren is rescued by Lúthien.
c.465Celegorm and Curufin are exiled from Nargothrond and journey to Himring.
466Birth of Lalaith, second child of Húrin and Morwen.
Beren and Lúthien recover a Silmaril from Morgoth's Iron Crown, but it is taken by Carcharoth.
The Hunting of the Wolf, and the recovery of the Silmaril. Beren is mortally wounded, and dies soon afterward.
467Likely date of the birth of Hunthor in Brethil.
Spring Lúthien departs from the world, and her spirit travels to the Halls of Mandos.
468Formation of the Union of Maedhros.
469Death of Lalaith from a sickness at the age of three.
Beren and Lúthien return to life, and make their dwelling on the isle of Tol Galen.
470Birth of Dior Eluchíl on Tol Galen.
471Probable year of the death of Halmir. He is succeeded as Lord of Brethil by his son Haldir.
472Túrin is sent to be fostered in Doriath.
Marriage of Huor and Rían; Tuor is born later in the year, but Rían dies on the Haudh-en-Nirnaeth soon after.
Huor is slain in the Fen of Serech, and Húrin is captured by Morgoth.
Fingon is slain in the Nirnaeth. Turgon becomes High King of the Noldor.
Death of Glóredhel.
Spring The Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
473Niënor is born in Dor-lómin; meanwhile, her elder brother Túrin arrives in Doriath.
Siege and capture of the Havens of Brithombar and Eglarest, and the destruction of the tower of Barad Nimras.
478No events are recorded for the specific year you selected.
481Túrin becomes a marchwarden of Doriath.
484Túrin causes the death of Saeros, and exiles himself from Doriath.
487Túrin slays Forweg and becomes captain of the Gaurwaith; he and his companions encounter Mîm, and settle in Amon Rûdh.
488Tuor is captured and enslaved by Lorgan.
Annael and his people set out from Mithrim seeking refuge at the Mouths of Sirion.
489Escape of Gwindor from Angband; he later meets Beleg in Taur-nu-Fuin.
The Gaurwaith of Bar-en-Danwedh are assaulted by Orcs. Túrin is captured by Orcs and carried off. He is rescued by Beleg and Gwindor, but mistakenly slays Beleg.
490Túrin is healed at Eithel Ivrin, and Gwindor leads him to Nargothrond.
c.490Approximate date of the reforging of Anglachel into Gurthang.
491Tuor escapes from Lorgan, and lives as an outlaw in the Caves of Androth.
492Birth of Dior's elder son Eluréd.
494Morwen and Niënor flee from Dor-lómin to Doriath.
495Handir falls in battle, and is succeeded as Lord of Brethil by his son Brandir.
Tuor escapes through the Cirith Ninniach and meets Voronwë at Vinyamar; together they travel to Gondolin.
Birth of Dior's younger son Elurín.
Autumn The Battle of Tumhalad and Sack of Nargothrond.
Autumn The Fell Winter begins.
496Morwen and Niënor ride with Mablung to Nargothrond, where Niënor falls under the Dragon-spell of Glaurung. She later comes to Brethil and is healed by Brandir.
Túrin slays Brodda in Dor-lómin, and then travels on, settling eventually in Brethil.
Spring The Fell Winter draws to a close.
498Brethil is assaulted by Orcs, and Túrin reluctantly takes up his black sword Gurthang to combat them, unwittingly revealing himself to Morgoth.
Midyear's Day Túrin weds Níniel in Brethil.
499Release of Húrin from Angband.
Slaying of Glaurung, and deaths of Túrin Turambar and Nienor Níniel and Brandir in Brethil.
c.500Death of Larnach.
501Húrin encounters Morwen at the Stone of the Hapless, where he witnesses her death.
Húrin goes to the ruin of Nargothrond, where he slays Mîm and recovers the Nauglamír.
502Húrin recovers the Nauglamír from Nargothrond and carries it to Doriath, where it is reforged to hold a Silmaril.
Wedding of Tuor and Idril in Gondolin.
Likely date of the death of Húrin Thalion.
Death of Thingol and departure of Melian. The Dwarves of Nogrod ransack Menegroth.
503Birth of Eärendil in Gondolin.
Deaths of Beren and Lúthien.
Journey of Dior to Doriath.
Birth of Elwing, daughter of Dior and Nimloth.
506Midwinter Assault by the Sons of Fëanor on Menegroth. Dior, Celegorm, Curufin and Caranthir are all slain; Elwing flees to the Mouths of Sirion with the Silmaril.
508The survivors of Morgoth's attacks on Beleriand begin to gather at the Mouths of Sirion.
509Maeglin is captured by agents of Morgoth, and betrays the location of Gondolin.
510Glorfindel slays a Balrog in the Encircling Mountains, and is himself slain.
Fall of Gondolin and death of Turgon.
511Arrival of Tuor and Idril at the Mouths of Sirion, with their son Eärendil.
525Wedding of Eärendil and Elwing
Tuor and Idril sail into the West in the ship Eärrámë. Their son Eärendil becomes Lord of the Havens of Sirion.
