Rían

The mortal grandmother of Eärendil

The daughter of Belegund of the House of Bëor, she wedded Huor; she was the mother of Tuor and grandmother of Eärendil the Mariner.

Notes

1

Rían's dates only appear in a genealogical chart in volume XI of The History of Middle-earth, and so cannot be considered absolutely canonical. The Silmarillion does imply that she died in the same year as the Nirnaeth Arnoediad (I 472) so these dates are consistent with the primary published text.

2

The Etymologies (in volume V of The History of Middle-earth) explain the name Rían as deriving from ríg-anna, 'crown-gift'.
