VORONWË

A mariner of Gondolin, sent by Turgon to seek a passage to Aman and call on the Valar for aid against Morgoth. He failed, and was washed ashore in Nevrast, where he encountered Tuor and led him back as messenger of Ulmo to the city of Gondolin.

Notes

1

We first hear of Voronwë as a mariner sent south by Turgon soon after the destruction of the Havens. Círdan's Havens fell in I 472, so Voronwë must have been born before that date. He is last seen guiding Tuor to Gondolin twenty-three years later, in I 495, after which he makes no further appearance in any canonical work.

According to older traditions, though, he escaped the ruin of Gondolin and eventually sailed into the West, either with his friend Tuor, or even (in the earliest versions of the story) with Eärendil himself. Nothing of this has survived into the published edition of The Silmarillion.
