High-captain of Angband

The rank of the Balrog Gothmog

A title of Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs. Though we have little detail about the organisation of Morgoth's forces, it is clear that Gothmog held high authority under Morgoth. He was probably second-in-command after Sauron (who is referred to as Morgoth's lieutenant, and as the original commander of Angband was clearly higher even than Gothmog among the ranks of Morgoth's followers).
