Sauron first established himself as a Dark Lord between c.II 1000 and II 3441; he returned in c.III 1050, and the Darkness of his rule continued (with the interruption of the Watchful Peace between III 2063 and III 2460) until III 3019
Centred primarily on Mordor, but for much of the Third Age Sauron's seat of power was at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood

A term usually used symbolically for the dark power of Sauron and the regions under his sway. During the War of the Ring, though, Sauron's Darkness became a dreadful reality, as it spread out of Mordor and covered the lands of the West for many days.
