Uffo Boffin

The second son of Otto the Fat

The second of the four children of Otto Boffin, who lived long before the War of the Ring. Uffo married Sapphira Brockhouse, and had two children: Gruffo and Gerda. Uffo was not closely related to any of the more well-known Hobbits, and is perhaps most notable for being an uncle of Lobelia Sackville-Baggins.

Notes

1

Uffo is one of many variants on a common Germanic name meaning 'wolf' (the name is related to that of the historical King Offa of Mercia, as well as - more remotely - that of Wulf, the usurper of Rohan. Though 'wolf' is the literal meaning of the name, its selection by Tolkien was doubtless influenced by its resonance with other Boffin forenames, such as those of the patriarch Buffo Boffin, or of Uffo's own son Gruffo.
