Terebinth

A resinous tree found in Ithilien

A tree of warm climates that grows with thick foliage from a sturdy trunk, producing many small fruits. The terebinth was historically the source of turpentine, and it produces a strong and distinct resinous odour (hence the reference to 'pungent terebinth' in The Two Towers IV 4, Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit).

Trees of this kind were among the many varieties discovered by Frodo and Sam as they journeyed through the garden land of Ithilien. It seems that the terebinth of Ithilien had originally been planted there by the Gondorians, but at the end of the Third Age the land had long been abandoned, and the terebinth grew wild among a profusion of other trees and shrubs.
