One of the many descendants of the Old Took, Reginard was old Gerontius' great-great-grandson (though his line of descent was far from that leading to the Thainship). He was the elder brother of Everard Took, and like Everard, he was present at Bilbo's Farewell Party, though unlike his brother he was not mentioned directly in the history of that event. Reginard was a near contemporary of Frodo Baggins, born just one year after Bilbo's adopted heir.

We are not told how long Reginard lived, but we do know that he was present at Bilbo Baggins' Farewell Party in III 3001. Reginard would have been thirty-two years old in that year, not quite having come of age, in Hobbit terms. If he lived a typical Hobbit lifespan of about a century, he would have survived through the War of the Ring and long into the Fourth Age.

The name Reginard has obvious similarities to the real name 'Reginald'. The different ending seems to be designed to follow a tradition in this branch of the Took family, descended from a son of the Old Took named Isembard, of choosing names ending in -ard. The meaning behind this ending varied from name to name, but in most cases it meant 'strong'. In Reginald, the regin- element came from a Germanic word meaning 'advisor', so Reginard's name could be interpreted to mean something like 'strong advisor'.

Earlier editions of The Lord of the Rings mistakenly show three unnamed sisters to Reginard and Everard. This was corrected to two unnamed sisters in editions published after 2004. |
