Nina Lightfoot

The mother of Wilibald Bolger

A Hobbit of the Shire, Nina married Theobald, the son of Gundabald Bolger and Salvia Brandybuck. Nina and Theobald had a single son, Wilibald, who married Prisca Baggins and had three children of his own. Nina is the only known member of her family: no other Hobbit named Lightfoot is recorded, but - no doubt coincidentally - the name was shared by a horse of Rohan.

Notes

1

We have no definite dates for Nina Lightfoot. The date of birth given here is for her husband Theobald Bolger, on the assumption that Nina would have probably have been born within a few years of this date. Hobbits typically lived until about their hundredth year, so on this basis Nina likely survived until about III 2961 (or 1361 by the Shire-reckoning). Our latest definite date for Nina is rather earlier than this, III 2904 (or 1304), the year in which her son Wilibald was born.

2

The name 'Nina' is explicitly said to have held no meaning to the Shire-hobbits. In modern use, the name appears in several different languages around the world with numerous possible derivations, though none of these stand out as likely sources of a Hobbit-name. In modern use, the name is commonly abbreviation for various longer names. This may also be true of Nina Lightfoot's case, but if Nina had a fuller version of her forename, it is not recorded.
