An Old English word meaning 'renewed' or 'restored'. It was used as a title for Théoden of Rohan after Gandalf cured him of the malign influence of Saruman and the poisonous lies of Saruman's agent Gríma Wormtongue. Before Gandalf's intervention, the King had been become no more than a decrepit old man, but after his 'renewal', he led his people on to great victories in the War of the Ring before his death on the battlefield of the Pelennor.

Notes

1

The title Ednew could only meaningfully have been applied to Théoden after his restoration by Gandalf. After being healed, the King rode away to war, and he was slain in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields just thirteen days later. Given this dating, he was probably never called Théoden Ednew while he was alive, and the title was more likely devised for use in a historical context by later scholars.
