Bridge Inn

The inn by the Brandywine Bridge

The Bridge Inn at the Brandywine Bridge (slightly conjectural)1
The Bridge Inn at the Brandywine Bridge (slightly conjectural)1

An inn built on the western banks of the River Brandywine, where the East Road passed out of the Shire's Eastfarthing and across the Brandywine Bridge into the lands beyond. Its location would have put it near the point where the road north from Stock met the main East-West Road, so it was able to serve travellers from west, east and south. The inn was demolished during the War of the Ring; it was replaced by a guardhouse at the same time that gates were put in place on the Brandywine Bridge itself.

Notes

1

The Bridge Inn is not shown on any map, but its location (or, more precisely, the location of the Shirriff-house that replaced it) is clearly explained in the text of The Lord of the Rings. It stood immediately to the west of the Brandywine Bridge, so it would be the first building encountered by a traveller entering the Shire along the East Road. We're also told that it was on the left, from the point of view of such a traveller, which would place it on the south side of the road.
