Took

The only son of Hildigrim Took, who was in turn the fourth child of the famous Old Took. Adalgrim himself had four children, including Paladin Took, his only son. During most of Adalgrim's lifetime, the Thain of the Shire was his first cousin Ferumbras III. However, Ferumbras never married, and after his death the inheritance of the Thainship passed by circuitous routes through Hildigrim's line of descent. If Adalgrim had survived his cousin, he would have become Thain himself, but as events unfolded it was his son Paladin who inherited the title to become Thain Paladin II. In time the Thainship passed on to Adalgrim's grandson, the famous Peregrin Took.
