Angerthas

The Runes

Certhas Daeron
Angerthas Daeron
Angerthas Moria
Ereborian Cirth

The runes used in Erebor in the later Third Age had their origins in a line of descent and development through various forms of Angerthas, descending ultimately from the Certhas of Daeron. This is the only line described in any detail, but there would have been other branches of development used by other peoples - particularly the Dwarves - across Middle-earth.

An Elvish term for Runic writing, said to have the literal meaning of 'long Rune-rows'. There were numerous variants, but the two principal forms were the Angerthas Daeron, used by the Elves to represent Sindarin, and the Angerthas Moria, the classical form used by the Dwarves.

Notes

1

Angerthas derives from Elvish Certhas 'runes', with a prefix an- meaning 'long', so the entire word is interpreted 'long rune rows'. The first recorded use of the word is in the Angerthas Moria, the form adopted by the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm from their neighbours the Elves of Eregion, but in later times it came to be used of runes in general, or at least the forms used by the Dwarves.
