This fourth magnitude blue star lies almost directly southward of Rigel, the western foot of Orion, and marks one of the 'ears' of Lepus, the constellation of the Hare. Kappa Leporis is a binary system, in which the visible blue star is only one of a pair of components. The other star of the system is much fainter than the blue primary, and orbits it at a distance of some 500 AU.

The primary star is categorised as a dwarf or main sequence star, but is several times the mass of the Sun, and generates more than seven hundred times as much light energy. There is some evidence that it may possess a circumstellar disc of matter, though this has yet to be conclusively demonstrated.
