HR 87

The apparently much brighter star to the northeast of HR 87 is Beta Hydri, one of three stars that make up the shape of Hydrus, the Lesser Water Snake. In fact, the difference in brightness is an effect of perspective: Beta Hydri is a relatively close neighbour of the Sun at just twenty-four light years' distance, while HR 87 is more than eight hundred light years away. If the two stars lay at the same distance from Earth, HR 87 would shine thirty times more brightly than Beta Hydri. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
