West-that-was

The lands that once lay beyond the Great Sea

A poetic term for the region of Aman, often simply called 'the West'. This was the land where Valinor and Eldamar were found, the realms of the Valar and the High Elves. It remained within the world through most of its history, but after the disastrous events near the end of the Second Age, in which Ar-Pharazôn of Númenor attempted to invade Aman, it was taken away from the world. After that time the Blessed Realm could only by reached by those able to traverse the Straight Road, and thus Aman became almost inaccessible to those of the race of Men.
