Vassal

The meaning of Bëor‘s name

Bëor
'Vassal'
Baran
Belen

The leader of the first Men to cross the Blue Mountains into Beleriand was originally named Balan in his own language. On the western slopes of the mountains, he and his companions encountered the Elf Finrod Felagund. From Finrod these Men learned much, and Balan was astonished and awed by the Elf's wisdom and knowledge.

Finrod remained with Balan and his people for a year, but at last set out to return to his own kingdom of Nargothrond. Balan then gave up the leadership of his people, passing his lordship to his son Baran. He accompanied Finrod back to Nargothrond, and remained in the Elf-king's service until the end of his long life. His people therefore gave him a new name in their tongue, Bëor, meaning 'Vassal', and it is by this name that he and his house are known in the histories of the First Age.
