Urwen

The original name of Lalaith

The second child of Húrin and Morwen was a golden-haired daughter. In the account of her brother Túrin in The Silmarillion, she is briefly mentioned as being '...called Lalaith, which is Laughter...'.1 In the fuller account of Túrin's life, the Narn i Chîn Húrin, we discover that Lalaith was not in fact her original name, but that she was properly called Urwen. In both versions of the story, her fate was tragically the same: at the age of just three, she fell victim to a deadly disease out of Angband.
