Ring of Rings

Greatest of the Rings of Power

A term for Sauron's supreme Ring of Power, greater than all of the others created during the Second Age and borne by the Dark Lord himself. While most of the Rings of Power were created in Eregion following the secret teachings of Sauron, the Ring of Rings - more usually called the One Ring or simply the Ring - was forged by Sauron alone in the Fire of Mount Doom.

The Ring of Rings conferred many powers, among them invisibility and domination over the minds of overs, including those whose bore the other Rings of Power. Sauron's original intention was to use his Ring to consume the wills of the Elves, but they detected him and evaded his trap. Others, less wary, fell under Sauron's control. Foremost among these were nine powerful Men in the Second Age to whom Sauron gave their own Rings of Power, and then enslaved them utterly through his Ring of Rings, turning them into the Nazgûl or Ringwraiths.
