Long-eared, furry animals, also called 'coneys', that were as common in Middle-earth as they are today. A favourite dish of the Hobbits.

Until the eighteenth century, these animals were more commonly called 'coneys', with the word 'rabbit' reserved for their young. 'Rabbit' has its origins in Germanic, but the original meaning is not known.
