One of the informal titles traditionally given to the Masters of Buckland, applied in this case to Gorbadoc Brandybuck, who was the great-grandfather of Meriadoc. Many of these nicknames celebrated great qualities of their bearers (as for example in 'Masterful' or 'Magnificent'), but some were less complimentary, and 'Broadbelt' seems to fall into the second category. Though it is not explained in detail, it apparently suggests that Gorbadoc was rather rotund in shape.
