The easternmost part of the forests of Doriath, a narrow land divided from the larger part of the Forest of Region by the River Aros, and separated from the plainlands to the east by the Celon. At the time of the First Battle of the Wars of Beleriand, many survivors of the Nandor fled the fighting to seek refuge in Doriath, and it was in Arthórien that most of them settled.
Notes
1 |
Originally the name Arthórien was given to Doriath as a whole, coming from a root word thur-, meaning both 'fence' and 'hide'. The reference is to the Girdle of Melian, which protected and concealed the realm from its enemies. In later use the name came to apply only to the forests eastward of the river Aros, though these forests still lay within the Girdle.
