Amarië

Beloved of Finrod

The beloved of Finrod Felagund, who remained in Valinor when Finrod followed Fëanor into Middle-earth.

The Silmarillion tells us almost nothing about Amarië, but a few more fragments of information can be gleaned from The Grey Annals in volume XI of The History of Middle-earth. It seems that she was a Vanyarin Elf-maiden, and that she had been denied permission to accompany Finrod into exile (which in turn suggests that she herself had wanted to follow him to Middle-earth). After Finrod was slain in Sauron's dungeons, his spirit returned to Valinor, and he was re-embodied there and reunited with Amarië.

Notes

1

Amarië's name is very difficult to interpret, and indeed it is unclear whether it has a distinct meaning. It possibly contains the element -mar- 'home' (as a reference to Amarië's remaining 'at home' in Aman when Finrod crossed into Middle-earth), though even this is highly speculative.
