The mountains of Montes Caucasus extend northward from Montes Apenninus to form a strip of highland between two large lunar seas. To the west lies Mare Imbrium, and to the east is Mare Serenitatis. The northern extent is indistinct, but the mountains reach as far as the ancient walled plain of Alexander.
