The galactic position and direction of 139 Tauri relative to Earth's Sun. Note that, at this
extreme scale, the two stars appear to be extremely close together.
139 Tauri lies just within Taurus' westernmost border, where it meets
Gemini to the north of Orion. It is an immensely
luminous blue supergiant,
comparable with Deneb or Rigel, though rather less massive. At a distance of some 1,600 light years from the Solar System, it is
only faintly visible to the naked eye.
