Sauron settled in the south of Greenwood the Great in about III 1050, after which the Wood was renamed Mirkwood; after Sauron's defeat at the end of the Third Age, the name was changed again to Eryn Lasgalen, 'Wood of Greenleaves'

The Wood-elves were of the Silvan folk, while the Woodmen descended from the Northmen
