Warden of the Keys

The office of Húrin the Tall

A high office of Minas Tirith in Gondor, a position filled at the time of the War of the Ring by Húrin the Tall (also called Húrin of the Keys). The details of its responsibilities are uncertain.

Notes

1

Though the only Warden of the Keys that appears in records is Húrin the Tall at the end of the Third Age, there's a clear impression that this was an ancient and important rank among the Gondorians. Indeed, at one point in the War of the Ring, Húrin of the Keys held command of Minas Tirith, so the Warden was apparently second only to the Steward in importance. Indeed, the name Húrin implies that the Wardens may have been descended from the House of Húrin, which would make them kin to the line of the Stewards.
